Samantha Bernard, daughter of LCDR Jeff and Anita Bernard of McGrew Point in Aiea, has been named 2009 Hawaii Teen of the Year in the competition held March 5 at the State Capitol. She won $1000 in a scholarship. Contestants are judged on moral character, leadership skills, academic achievements, service to the community and obstacles to overcome.

Bernard, who will turn 18 on March 12, is a student at the Myron B. Thompson Academy who works at Dixie Grill in Aiea where her sister Celeste also worked for more than a year.

“Samantha has worked at Dixie Grill for almost a year now. We are proud of the kind of employee she is–conscientious, hardworking and as good with her fellow employees as with the customers,” said restaurant owner Ed Wary in congratulating Bernard.

Bernard will compete in July in California against other winners in the Pacific regional division for Teen of the Year scholarship of $10,000 and the right to go to the national competition in Washington where President Barack Obama will install the national winner in an Oval Office ceremony. The national competition includes an additional $15,000 scholarship.
